Lymphatic health extends beyond only reducing fluid retention; supporting this network of vessels, lymph nodes, and lymphatic organs helps the body to function more efficiently. Our lymphatic system clears excess waste and supports our immune system. Lymph, the clear fluid transported through lymphatic vessels, contains lymphocytes, which are white blood cells that fight infection and rid the bloodstream of harmful bacteria. After filtering through the lymph nodes, lymph flows through the lymphatic vessels, returns to the body's tissues, and is recirculated through the lymphatic ducts.

Lymphatic health can support women in multiple ways, such as hormonal balance, reducing breast tenderness, fluid balance, and easing symptoms of perimenopause and menopause.

Menopause

Menopause is a normal biological stage of a woman’s life where menstruation stops, and she can no longer reproduce. Often referred to as “Second Spring” in Chinese medicine, because this period is seen as a powerful energetic shift from outward production to inward personal renewal, wisdom, and vitality. When menstruation stops, the body is no longer expending life force on reproduction. TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) views this energy as a redirection to inward practices and spiritual growth.

The transitional time leading to menopause is referred to as perimenopause. Many women begin the menopausal transition between 45 and 55. This stage can happen for years. Menopause is reached when you have not had a period or spotting for a year.

There are a multitude of side effects associated with menopause; each person's experience will vary. Some women have very mild to no menopausal symptoms. Commonly, insomnia, hot flashes, bloating, joint pain, fatigue, puffiness, mood changes, inflammation, and fluid retention are reported.

Progesterone and estrogen production, hormones made by the ovaries, drop significantly. Changes in these crucial hormones result in the symptoms women experience during this time. Specifically, these hormonal shifts during perimenopause and menopause can slow the lymphatic system, causing stagnation. Estrogen directly affects lymphatic vessel function, structural integrity of lymphatic walls, and fluid balance through estrogen receptors. The decline during menopause changes how the lymphatic system manages lymph fluid. Fluctuations in this hormone can also cause erratic spikes that trigger fluid leakage and overload the lymphatic system. Because of the sudden overabundance of fluid, swelling, bloating, and the sensation of heavy limbs occur.

Encouraging lymph flow supports stable fluid movement. You can do this with manual lymphatic drainage techniques, exercise, breathwork, or hydration.

PMOS (formerly known as PCOS)

PMOS stands for polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome, which is the updated medical name for the condition previously known as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Medical organizations updated the name from PCOS to PMOS to better describe the condition. The previous name focused heavily on ovarian cysts, which was often a misnomer since the "cysts" are actually undeveloped egg follicles. The new name highlights that multiple hormone systems (polyendocrine) and metabolism (metabolic) are involved.

A PMOS diagnosis typically includes at least two of the following symptoms: follicles on the ovaries, irregular periods, or high androgen levels.

Common symptoms reported are persistent bloating, infertility, facial hair, hormonal acne, hair loss, chronic fatigue, water retention, puffiness, and moon face. While there is no cure for PMOS, many women find that lymphatic drainage massage offers natural relief from several of the condition’s most disruptive symptoms.

Lymphatic drainage reduces fluid retention and eases tissue congestion; these gentle massage techniques help move trapped interstitial fluid away from swollen tissues. It relieves the heavy, sluggish feeling in the abdomen and limbs caused by slowed lymph flow. Better fluid movement helps clear out inflammation that accumulates with hormonal imbalances.

Stress is an aggravator of PMOS symptoms. Elevated cortisol levels worsen insulin sensitivity and the hormonal loop that regulates the menstrual cycle. The light pressure of lymphatic massage encourages the parasympathetic nervous system to shift into a calming "rest and digest" state. Reducing overall physical tension helps the body better cope with endocrine stress.

Circulation to the pelvic region can support healthy ovarian function. Lymphatic drainage is not a fertility treatment, but can be utilized in a broader health and wellness treatment for cycle regularity and reduction in pelvic discomfort.

 Geppina / VacuTherapy

Our Approach

Our lymphatic work is based on the Gepina Method, a three-pillar approach: the lymphatic system, the fascial system, and the nervous system. Our comprehensive care focuses on multiple body systems to provide thorough, individualized treatments. We integrate Eastern and Western modalities, along with advanced compression therapy, to work with superficial and deeper lymphatic structures while considering the body's overall tissue environment and individual needs.

Pelvic Health Now

The lymphatic pelvic floor contains a complex network of muscles, fascia, and connective tissues that runs along the pelvic region. Our Pelvic Health Now treatment focuses on this area, using gentle techniques to improve lymph fluid flow, reduce congestion, and ease pelvic pain. Lymph fluid in the pelvis drains through a specific chain of regional lymph nodes before moving up into the abdomen and bloodstream. Lymph fluid from pelvic organs drains primarily into the internal iliac, external iliac, and common iliac lymph nodes, as well as sacral and para-aortic nodes. Specific organ drainage pathways include the bladder, prostate, uterus, and vagina.

When the lymphatic system can't move fluid properly, excess lymph builds up, causing congestion and pelvic floor dysfunction. This term can describe a variety of disorders related to pelvic support and function. Lymph accumulation can create pressure on the pelvic floor, weakening it over time. This can lead to incontinence, uterine or bladder prolapse, and chronic inflammation.
