Pelvic health and bladder function are connected to the muscles, blood vessels, and lymphatic system surrounding the pelvis. When fluid accumulates or circulation is impaired, some people may feel pressure, heaviness, swelling, or discomfort. Pelvic congestion syndrome (PCS) is a form of pelvic venous disorder involving enlarged or poorly functioning pelvic veins. Symptoms can include chronic pelvic pain and bladder irritation or urinary urgency. Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) can play a supportive role. MLD uses gentle techniques intended to encourage lymphatic fluid movement and help manage edema. Research has found benefits from MLD for certain types of venous-related edema and swelling. For someone experiencing pelvic or lower abdominal congestion, properly performed lymphatic techniques may help support fluid movement, reduce tissue swelling, and promote comfort.

Can Lymphatic Drainage Help With Incontinence?

It is important to distinguish pelvic congestion from urinary incontinence. Incontinence can have many causes, including pelvic floor dysfunction, pregnancy and childbirth, neurological conditions, and changes affecting the bladder or urethra. Evidence is currently insufficient to support lymphatic drainage alone as a treatment for urinary incontinence. Because of this, lymphatic drainage should not be considered a stand-alone treatment for bladder leakage or urgency.

Our approach looks beyond the lymphatic system in isolation. Depending on the individual's needs and goals, lymphatic treatments may incorporate gentle techniques around the pelvis, lower abdomen, and surrounding tissues to support healthy fluid movement and tissue mobility. By addressing areas connected to pelvic congestion and lower-abdominal fluid balance, our goal is to create an environment that supports overall pelvic function. This work can be particularly valuable as part of a broader wellness or recovery plan alongside appropriate medical care or pelvic health physical therapy.

A Complementary Approach to Pelvic Wellness

Supporting pelvic health isn't always about addressing one structure by itself. The lymphatic, circulatory, fascial, muscular, and nervous systems all contribute to healthy pelvic function. At Cohesive Therapy, we incorporate lymphatic-focused treatments with attention to the pelvic area and lower abdominals when appropriate, creating a personalized approach based on each client's needs. Our goal is to support healthy fluid movement, reduce swelling or congestion, and promote overall pelvic comfort.

Lymphatic drainage is not a replacement for medical evaluation, treatment for pelvic congestion syndrome, or pelvic floor physical therapy. However, for appropriate clients, it can be a valuable complementary therapy within a comprehensive approach to pelvic and whole-body wellness.
